'The Hunting Game' by F. H. Ayres Ltd of London.
This rare example of 'The Hunting Game - an interesting shooting pastime' has all of it's original wooden animal targets, which are hinged to the back so that they fall backwards when shot, and each one has a score underneath. When the lid of the box is folded open it reveals a well illustrated woodland scene, providing the background for this wonderful shooting gallery game. The hinged lid is supported when open by two steel rods. The gun and dart appear to be original and both are intact and working. The green painted wooden box is complete and still has good colour, although there are the inevitable signs of age related wear as expected. The original manufacturer's label to the top of the lid is still present and clear.
F. H Ayres were best known for sports equipment and rocking horses. They produced an enormous number of parlour and garden games too and around the 1880s were great rivals with Jaques. Established in 1810 by Edward Ayres in Clerkenwell, initially as a turner and maker of furniture and games, the firm increased their output into the burgeoning market of general sports equipment. Towards the end of the 19th century they were probably the leading manufacturer of sports and games equipment in Britain.
Please remember that you are purchasing vintage items. They have lived a life and will have the age related wear which gives the items their original and unique character.
